Whitehorse & The Southern Lakes

We have intentionally kept our driving days short so we can stop, take in the sights and learn more about this great land of ours without feeling rushed. We arrived early in Teslin and after setting up camp at the territorial campground west of town we ventured out to visit the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre and the George Johnston Museum. We highly recommend the George Johnston Museum. After watching a short film about Johnston, we came away inspired by the story of this man, but also dismayed by the tragic impact that the construction of the Alaska Highway had on the community of Teslin and the indigenous peoples of this region.

And then came the rain…

Next stop: Whitehorse, with four rainy days and nights in an RV park at the south end of town. We are not big fans of crowded RV parks, but the convenience of city power, water, showers and the opportunity to do some laundry make them a necessary evil. It was also a good home base to explore Whitehorse and the surrounding region.

Rainy days were good museum and micro brewery beer tasting days. The Beringia Interpretive Centre is certainly worth the visit as was Yukon Brewing (which merited two separate visits; one for beer tasting and one for whisky tasting). We didn’t, however, just limit ourselves to indoor activities, we walked the city trails and made it to Miles Canyon the one afternoon that the sun came out.

Unfortunately the low clouds and drizzle masked much of the beauty of this drive.

One afternoon we travelled down to the South Klondike Hwy to Carcoss, across to Tagish, then back to Whitehorse. Unfortunately the low clouds and drizzle masked much of the beauty of this drive. A trip to The Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs (the old Takhini Hot Springs) and the Yukon Wildlife Preserve rounded out our stay. A few last minute stops in town to pick up supplies and we were ready for the next leg of our journey.
