North Klondike Highway - Whitehorse to Dawson City

Luckily there was very little traffic as we weaved our way down the highway like a drunken sailor...

The rain stopped and it was time to leave Whitehorse. Leaving the Alaska Highway west of Whitehorse we turned north on the Klondike Highway. It is a long drive to Dawson City so we split this leg into two days. The first day wad short and uneventful with one rest stop at the Historic Montague Roadhouse.

We arrived early so we had our pick of sites and got one right beside the river

With a reasonably good road and light traffic it was an easy day to Carmacks and then another 20 km north to the Tatchun Creek Territorial Campground. We arrived early and with the campground being empty we had our pick of sites and got one right beside the river. A very relaxing afternoon.

Tatchun Creek to Dawson City was to be another story…

Early the next morning we pulled out of Tatchun Creek. Newly flowering fireweed lined both sides of the narrow highway but, despite the beauty, the road progressively got worse with potholes. Some were fresh, some were repaired, but even then still deep enough to bounce the trailer. Luckily there was very little traffic as we weaved our way down the highway like a drunken sailor. After a quick stop at Moose Creek Lodge to pick up some pastries we hit the first of two major construction zones, both requiring pilot vehicles. This was to be the worst part of the drive so far. The detouring sections of highway were just wet sand and the truck worked hard to pull the trailer through these areas.

We were soon on the downhill run to Dawson City and were happy to set up camp at the Klondike River Territorial Campground. A short visit to Dawson City (we will be coming back to visit Dawson at a later date) to walk around, drive up to the Dome and to refuel in preparation for our trip to Tombstone Territorial Park the next day.
