Liard River Hot Springs

Liard River Hot Springs is a beautiful little gem along the Alaska Highway

We spent two easy days relaxing at Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park in northern BC. Open year round, these are said to be the second largest natural hot springs in Canada. The one pool that is accessible to the public has water temperatures that range from 42C to 52C.

These are my favourite hot springs and a “must do” for any one traveling along the Alaska Highway.

The campground is a very popular spot and fills up fast so camping reservations are highly recommended (if not a must). There is a gravel overflow camping across the highway for those who show up with out reservations. The campground is clean and well maintained. The sites are unserviced, there are pit toilets and the campground perimeter is fenced with an electric fence to keep the bears away. No sani-dump station or fresh water for those in RVs, so make sure you come with water. There is a water spigot near the entrance, but a boil water advisory is in place. Your $26/night camping fee gets you unlimited access to the hot springs. For folks who aren’t camping the cost to access the hot springs is $10/person. Laird River Lodge is adjacent to the campground and offers rooms and an RV park.

The hot springs were a short 600m walk from the campground, along a board walk over a warm water marsh. We visited the hot springs three times during our stay. Late morning was the least crowded, presumably because many folks had departed on their way and the day’s incoming travellers had not yet arrived. The hot springs opened at 7:30am and closed at 10:30pm, and evening seemed to be the busiest time. We met many like-minded people from all over Canada and the USA with everyone sharing their travel stories and advice on places to go and things to do along the Alaska Highway. It was a great place to relax and recharge before continuing on with our travels.
