Driving North - The First Few Days...

The longest part is actually getting to the start. Four days of travel and we still haven’t made it to the Yukon

We took two easy days to make our way to “Mile 0” of the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. At Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park just outside Whitecourt Alberta we saw what was likely to be our last sunset for many months. The days are getting longer and longer as we venture northward. Overnighting in Dawson Creek, we visited the Pioneer Village adjacent to our campground and, of course, the Alaska Highway Mile 0 marker. Dawson Creek to Ft Nelson BC was a long and uneventful day and although we were on “The Alaska Highway” it was not a particularly interesting drive, but we did see a few bears.

Mile 0 is at Dawson Creek, but the adventure really starts from Ft Nelson, BC

The adventure really starts from Ft Nelson. Driving from Ft Nelson to Liard Hotsprings Provincial Park took us across the Northern Rockies with many beautiful views and abundant wildlife. Black bears, moose, deer, stone sheep, one lone woodland caribou and many wood bison were easily visible from the road. Hauling a fifth wheel up and down steep inclines and, at times, a narrow winding highway, didn’t allow for many wildlife photo opportunities, but we did manage to get a few shots of some stone sheep rams and many wood bison and their calves. The bison themselves are road hazards as they graze along the side of the highway. Along the way we stopped in at the Tetsa River Lodge for a coffee and a ‘world famous cinnamon bun” (one of the many “world famous” cinnamon bun places long the Alaska Highway).

Intentionally keeping our days short, on Day 4 we pulled into Liard Hotsprings Provincial Park in the early afternoon for a relaxing two-day stay. There are lots of good camping opportunities on this leg of the journey; Summit Lake and Muncho Lake are very picturesque locations, but we had reservations and were looking forward to a dip in the hotsprings at the end of the day.

Ruby our four-mounth-old cockapoo puppy is travelling like a champ and is adapting well to the travel and RV lifestyle.
